Dolores Huerta is a woman who has made history and was honored for doing so by the National Women’s History Museum on October 25, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. As as a social justice activist and labor leader, Dolores has dedicated her life to ending discrimination. She has focused on improving economic and social conditions for those working in agriculture and is responsible for creating the Agricultural Workers Association and co-founding the United Farm Workers movement.
Dolores coined the slogan “Si Se Puede” for the United Farm Workers to rally support for the movement. Since it has become widely used by other labor and civil rights movements and was translated into English and used as the Slogan for President Barack Obama’s campaign in 2008.
When Dolores was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Obama, she reminded him that it was Dolores Huerta who first coined the slogan.
Dolores has been well recognized for her many achievements. In addition to receiving the Medal of Freedom, she is also the recipient of the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award, the Eugene V. Debs Foundation Outstanding American Award, and she was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame.
Valued for her social justice efforts, Delores is the subject of numerous ballads and murals. Six public schools around the nation have been named after Dolores Huerta and she has received nine honorary doctorate degrees. Currently, she serves as the President of the Dolores Huerta foundation with a mission of inspiring, motivating, and organizing sustainable communities to attain social justice. Incredibly, Dolores achieved these successes while raising eleven children.
As a mother, social justice activist, and community leader Dolores has set an example for all women and men. She has demonstrated that armed with passion and dedication, one can make great change. As a woman who has made history, Dolores inspires us all to do more, to do better, and to realize Si Se Puede!

Hooray for Dolores! I first learned about her in the early 1970s back in Illinois. Another graduate student had moved there from the Bay Area to study with our major professor. His wife was Hispanic and told us all about Chavez and Huerta. But what does Si se pueda mean?? I don’t speak Spanish. Like Carol, I think a longer blog would be useful. Tell us how she inspired you and other women you know.

Si se puede: Yes, it can be done; yes, it can happen. The rallying cry of anyone who tries to buck the system and is told “we can’t do that.”
