Because Mary Tyler Moore was one of our first role models of cheerful independent womanhood.
Why does this song still bring tears to my eyes?
Because I had never learned that a girl could make it on her own.
Because I feared that I couldn’t and hoped that I would.
And guess what, I did.
Lots of us did.
With help from our friends.
Mary showed us that too.
The Mary Tyler Moore Show was broadcast on Saturday nights.
Many of us were home alone, watching faithfully.
We do not forget.

Thanks for the memory. Like everybody else, I enjoyed the show, though I never liked it that she always said “Mr. Grant.” I also liked Mary in Ordinary People, but I thought Thoroughly Modern Millie was a silly movie. Looking back now, I see that it was silly on purpose.

I greatly enjoyed the Mary Tyler Moore show, and watched it regularly. I was always thrilled when she tossed her hat, because that was me taking chances breaking through everything I thought I couldn’t do, including love. And I’m still there now too, hat in hand.
