Introducing the Kindreds Podcast by Katey Zeh

What do we mean when we call girls “bossy”?

How do we deconstruct the myth that women can’t get along?

What are the real costs of emotional labor?

Kindreds is a podcast for souls sisters. In each episode my co-host Ashley Peterson and I take on big questions connected to our faith and our feminism from our respective homes in Mississippi and North Carolina. From the question of “Should I have a kid?” to “What does it mean to make a feminist choice?” we explore issues of gender, culture, and the church.

My favorite part of every episode is when we lift up the incredible people doing the work of justice in the world as our “Kindreds of the Moment.” We’ve featured folks like Dr. Willie Parker, the people of the Faith Matters Network, and Eileen Matthews, creator of the #100DaysofFeministAds campaign.

Why create a podcast?

After the U.S. Presidential election last November Ashley and I were in discussions about how we would find our footing in a new political reality that shocked us both. We are both faith leaders working in the reproductive health, rights, and justice movements in particularly conservative parts of the country. Rather than giving into the despair and pessimism we felt, we decided we could instead turn our energy to something life giving: conversations among kindred spirits that we could share as a source of hope, joy, and humor.

We were also interested to find while doing some initial research that even among the vast and ever growing podcast world, few of them touched on the intersections of progressive faith and feminism.  Mirroring the broader circles of these communities, we could find very little overlap. What better way to address that gap than by developing our own podcast. Nearly nine months later we launched with our first five episodes.

  1. Your premise sounds very interesting. OF COURSE women can get along with each other. I’m pretty sure it’s men (or women under their influence) who think we can’t get along. Hooray for Sisterhood! It’s still powerful.

  2. Enjoyed listening to the podcast Katey! Wishing much success for you and Ashley on your project. I didn’t know that the opinions about women/girls had regressed so much. Your podcast should help those who struggle.
