Women’s March in Long Beach, CA by Marie Cartier

Hello FAR family! Here are photos from the October 2nd Women’s March in Long Beach, CA. The Women’s March began after the 2016 “election” and continued through the Trump years, and was not immediately active after Biden won. But after Texas passed it horrific ban on abortions with no exceptions, the Women’s March re-ignited across the nation…  especially in response to the recent Supreme Court  approval of the unconstitutional ruling on abortion in Texas which limits abortion access to 6 weeks of pregnancy – a time span that denies abortion completely as almost all women do not even know they are pregnant within this time, never mind having time to decide if an abortion is their choice.

The Women’s March came together in October in a very short amount of time. For example the Long Beach rally came together in just 10 days. I attended and was one of 500+ (though reports said 200, I was there and we were more!

May the revolution continue! As Hillary Clinton said, “Women’s Rights are human rights.” And my favorite chant throughout the March was, “Who sent us? Ruth sent us!!”

Bio

Marie Cartier has a Ph.D. in Religion with an emphasis on Women and Religion from Claremont Graduate University.  She is the author of the critically acclaimed book Baby, You Are My Religion: Women, Gay Bars, and Theology Before Stonewall (Routledge 2013). She is a senior lecturer in Gender and Women’s Studies and Queer Studies at California State University Northridge, and in Film Studies at Univ. of CA Irvine.

  1. We had a Women’s March on October 2nd in Madison. There must have been 2,000 people there with great signs like the ones you show in your photos. But unfortunately, a split happened the night before the march, and the scheduled speakers didn’t speak. Instead there were three young speakers who spoke about the split, rather than what unites us. I could say more, but it would be long discussion of what needs to happen in today’s political environment, from white women listening to the voices of BIPOC women to younger women not blaming older women for historically inaccurate problems to a larger vision that allows us to make mistakes — because we are going to do that — and still work together.

  3. Thank you for sharing the story of this march and these photos. It is heartbreaking to see how we are moving so far backwards so quickly. The signs you photographed though are inspirational, and I hope the energy is found for us to come together to empower women not strangle us. It is pretty crucial.

Wow, this one got me: “They only care until you’re born” – I’ll say – In a world that is approaching 8 billion people the last thing we need is more humans…. no one wants to touch this one – but it’s time to STOP having children… not just because humans are destroying the earth but what this next generation of babies/ (and SO MANY ARE UNWANTED) is going to have to live through with climate changes… even if we reversed our CO2 emissions completely today – it is TOO LATE to undo the damage that is coming our way during the next 50 years… Thanks Marie!

    1. And it will be worse if we do nothing about climate change. We can mitigate the worst IF we find the political will to do that. So…I spent last weekend, demonstrating with over 300 Greenfaith initiatives all over the world to pressure our governments to do the right thing when they get to Glasgow in 10 days or so. Our second demonstration was a prayer vigil that involved a Muslim, an evangelical Christian, a Roman Catholic, a meteorologist (to give the scientific perspective), a Pagan, a Unitarian Universalist, and two American Indians. We prayed, we sang, and we did it in front of the Wisconsin statehouse, so our politicians had to see that a wide spectrum of faith organizations were pushing them to do the right thing for the planet and all Her peoples.

  5. Great photos, my friend! Good for you.

    I recently watched a TV news interview with a woman from Texas. She kept talking about “protecting preborn children.” Preborn??? That is insane language.

    Bright blessings to all women who depend on healthcare. All kinds of healthcare, including reproductive services. We should not wish evil on people, but I can’t help wishing curses (the opposite of blessings) on the mostly male legislators in Texas and other states who think they can lay their hands on our bodies, inside and out. Sigh.
