SheSpeaks! Eve by Janet Maika’i Rudolph

Author’s Note: I have begun a project called She Speaks! Women of the Bible Have Their Say. As part of this project, I have done five films with some very dedicated actors (friends of mine) who have dubbed themselves the SheSpeaks!Ensemble. I showed 4 of the films at the recent Yerusha Symposium. Based on the comments and reception, the project is now expanding. I am looking to create longer films that include story arcs. The first one will be of Eve. Below is the script for Eve along with the link to the video.

EVE speaks:

Why hello I don’t get visitors very often! Welcome. Come, come sit under my tree, let’s share some tea. I have the most wonderful and flavorful herbs here in my garden.

Look around at my most marvelous paradise. It is all filled with magical treasure. I’ll tell you a secret, the treasure I care for spans both the heavens and the earth. You see, we are at the place where spirit, breath and matter intersect. Where the living beings of earth and the animating forces of the divine join in harmony.

It is so hard to look at your holy book. I can’t imagine why I keep getting blamed for . . .well . . . just about everything.  It’s strange that your world wants to connect me with curses as I am the giver of life. In fact, did you know that my name Eve means life. I don’t understand what has become of you, my children. It is said that I brought a curse to humanity. Do you see life as a curse?  Let me tell you a bit about myself. Perhaps then you will see me differently.

First let me introduce you to two of my friends, here they are now, these two serpents who are approaching.

I see you are frightened. Why would that be? Do you think poorly of serpents too? They won’t hurt you. In fact, their venom has been known to inspire ecstatic trances just like the experience you are having right here, right now. It is this trance which allows you to visit me here in my garden of delight. Did you know that I am a Goddess? Yes I am serpent Goddess as well as a tree Goddess. I only appear to you now in this body so we can communicate.

When they inscribed the word for Goddess in Egypt, they included the hieroglyph of the cobra.

They knew me, they knew my essence. I don’t know why this would be surprising to you. I see that the symbol of healing in your world, the caduceus, has two serpents rising on a pole.

Does that mean that healing frightens you too? There was a very powerful oracle at Delphi in Greece. She was called the phythia after my pythons. A point of honor, I might add. Well, perhaps you are correct to be afraid of the oracle. Her knowledge did have the ability to chill one’s bones. But she was also a holder of great wisdom.

So please say hello to my friends, in truth yours too, Tohu and Bohu.

I see no one is laughing, don’t you recognize how clever I was in naming my serpent mates? Tohu waBohu is right there in the beginning of your holy book, Genesis 1:2.

And the earth was without form, and void;
and darkness was upon the face of the deep.

These are two words that sometimes get translated to mean chaos. But that’s not how I see it. To me, they represent the elements of the vast cauldron of raw, unformed material that gives rise to creation. My friends, Tohu and Bohu here, along with myself are the agents that added form to this primal ooze filled with life-giving seeds. As I said, a gift not a curse at all. You know, Adam didn’t get it either. But then he was made of earth stuff and is very concrete. I, bring the breath of creativity.

I am also the goddess of life and death. You can think of my garden here as a threshold way station, a place between the worlds, a jumping off point between heavenly and earthly adventures. Did you know that each of you all stopped here for my blessings on your way to earth? But then again no one ever remembers that. It’s a shame. Perhaps that is why I am seen as the source of curse.

On the way to the duality of life on earth, the pressure would be too much to handle all at once. It hurts until we get used to it. That’s why babies cry so much.

And you will stop here on your way back to the heavens as well. A chance to be present and adjust again to non-duality.

My garden here of earthly delights is also the garden of heavenly delights. I freely offer my blessings to all who pass through.

Can’t you see the gifting in that? Without the duality that I bring to you, you cannot walk upon the earth. Think about it, even your own bodies are dual. Two-sided brain lobes, heart chambers, pairs of lungs, kidneys, ovaries, testes, breasts, all of it. This is my gift to humanity.  A gift that allows you to enter space/time and walk upon this luscious EARTH

In fact, speaking of duality, you know, you cannot stay here too long in your body, dual as it is. This garden is not made for your form. Let me show you your way back.

Oh You have a question before you go. You know what? You don’t even have to ask because I know what it is I get asked that a lot. You want to know what type of tree we ate from? I will tell you. It isn’t an apple tree, a fig tree or even an almond tree, it is all of those and more. It is the tree of all-seeds. It is, after all, the tree of Eve or as you know it from your Holy Book, the tree of LIFE. My own tree.

The link to my YouTube channel is here. What I envision is this: The story arc of Eve will be based on the following films in this order: Eve, Namaah, Miriam 1, Miriam 2. I am in the process of rewriting them in order to stitch them together more smoothly. There will be a 2nd arc focusing on Mystery Schools which will begin with Sara and then include two stories I haven’t filmed yet, Sara 2 where she discusses the sacrifice of Isaac and the Rebekah telling her story as the wife of Isaac and the mother of Esau and Jacob.

I am not a film maker myself and don’t know much about the industry. If anyone has any ideas on how to make this a reality or wants to be a part of this project, please contact me.

  1. I loved your retelling of Eve. I was quite struck by the question she asked early on, “Do you see life as a curse?” For certainly I don’t.

    1. Thanks Sara. It is so fun to reframe. I love it when the vision I can see and my ability to express it come together. It doesn’t always happen. Thank you also for highlighting the quote (Beth too). In this process, it is very helpful for me to know what lines stand out as I am doing some re-writing.

  3. This is a a very interesting project Janet. My experience of the Bible in school classes and previous associations with the church is that no one takes much notice of the women in it except to portray them as a dark force that causes problems. Generally the Virgin Mary gets a good press having been stripped of sexuality in her creativity. I was particularly struck by the quote And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. To me this darkness is the great cauldron- from which all is born to which all returns at the end of life to be changed and reborn. I’m afraid I know nothing of film making myself but wish you luck with this creative endeavour which speaks in the many voices of the feminine.

  4. Nice to hear from you Iona. I agree with what you are saying about women. They/we have either been erased or diminished. And of course, “the deep” in Hebrew is Tehom which is connected to the goddess Tiamat. Another female lost or hidden.

  5. I love the conversation-style, the invitation to sit and talk, the interaction between goddess and visitor, with all her comments on how we may respond to her, what we wrote about her and how she experiences and interprets that. Much needed as an alternative window into powerful women in the bible! THANK YOU!
