Comrades in the Struggle – Part II by Xochitl Alvizo

My journey of “seeing” continued from undergrad, to my first job, and then into grad school. After eight years of satisfying and life-giving work at the family center in Los Angeles (where I thankfully recovered my sense of self), I moved across the country to attend graduate school at Boston University (BU). I was there for eleven years, completing a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy in Practical Theology. And, again, especially during my early years at BU, I was often the only Latina in the room.1 It was the next predominantly white context where I continued to develop as a scholar and find my way in the academy. 

It is the case for most of the Latino/a scholars I know that they too were often one of just a few, if not only, Latino/a doctoral students in their program.2 This has varied impacts. Being continually in places where you do not share the culture of the majority can be taxing, psychically and emotionally. It is work.

Comrades in the Struggle – Part I by Xochitl Alvizo

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, a city where one can still get away with growing up in majority “minority” schools and neighborhoods. And I mostly did. I attended an elementary school that was ninety-eight percent Latinx, with a great majority of them Mexican-American like me. My junior-high and high schools were each about fifty percent Latinx, with the other fifty percent from a diverse range of racial/ethnic backgrounds. While my context was not monocultural, it was definitely not white. 

Once I reached college, however, my context flipped. I attended a private research institution that was over fifty percent white, which is known for admitting students of affluent legacy families. College was the first time I found myself in a predominantly white context and encountered real financial wealth. Before college I had only known financially rich people in TV and movies. I truly hadn’t known that “being rich” was real. And it was also the first time I learned about Protestantism. Catholicism was the only Christianity I knew – though I did know about Jehovah’s Witnesses because they go door-to-door.

Archives from the FAR Founders: On the Events of Charlottesville, VA by Xochitl Alvizo

This post was originally published August 13, 2o17. And even though it was about the specific attack against peaceful protesters by white supremacists in Charlottesville, VA in 2017, during agent orange’s first term, it makes me think about the current, larger, and more global forms that white supremacy has taken during his second term. It reminds me just how much greater the need for our collective action continues to be.

It is in our hearts –one’s sense of superiority exists within. We are all and each capable of hate and bigotry.

It is considered the appropriate and necessary response to say that there is no room for it “here” – that we will not tolerate, in this case, white supremacy – here. Except here is exactly where it exists; here in our country, in our cities, in our communities, laws, structures, churches, homes, hearts and mind. The thread of a people’s sense of supremacy (power to dominate or defeat) has been woven into the fabric of this colonialist nation from the very beginning of what has come to be known as the United States of America.

I just submitted to the editor the final draft of a chapter I’ve been working on for about two years (no joke). Sometimes when I really care about a subject, it can take me a long time to process, reflect, and write on the subject (I shared a bit about this project on FAR early this year)—but this one might have taken the cake in terms of how slow a process it ended up being. Still, it is now submitted and in the hands of the publishing company, Oxford University Press, for the next step in the process.

Micro Joys by Xochitl Alvizo

“Micro joys helps us deal with macro sadness,” Ana Navarro. 

Ana Navarro, a political commentator, spoke those words when trying to explain the significance of the Bad Bunny Half Time show for Latin American people in the U.S. (the show which was also affectionately called “The Benito Bowl,” Benito being Bad Bunny’s first name). It’s a statement that captures the experience I witnessed among my extended Puerto Rican family regarding the meaningfulness of the Bad Bunny performance during the Super Bowl’s Half Time Show. (Mind you, we were only tuned in to catch the Benito Bowl, not the football game).    

It would be hard to overstate the significance and meaningfulness of the performance for Boricuas. Every single detail of the show means something and represents important aspects of Puerto Rican life, culture, and history. I encourage you to read a few articles or posts on the show if you are not already familiar in order to help you understand all that was involved and included in the performance.

Go, Dodger Blue? by Xochitl Alvizo  

Attending a Dodger game as a four- or five-year-old with my uncle, the biggest Dodger fan I ever met, was my first professional sporting events experience. To this day, I’m not a sports fan by any means, but if you ever do catch me watching or rooting for a sports team, it will be for the Dodgers, as it got wired into me at a very young age. 

So, I was one of the 51 million people across the U.S., Canada, and Japan tuning-in to watch the 7th game of the 2025 World Series between the Dodgers and the Blue Jays. I cheered, clapped, and whoo-hoo’d as the Dodgers made the final winning double-play in yet another extra-innings game in the series. But it was not without mixed feelings that I cheered on the team that has been part of my life and family upbringing.

Feminism – the small and the large of it by Xochitl Alvizo

Feminism’s critical principle is the affirmation and promotion of the full humanity of women; an assertion that must be made in light of a world that diminishes women’s dignity and autonomy thereby authorizing their subjugation. Sexism is the word we use to name the attitudes, prejudices, and actions that work to diminish women’s dignity and autonomy for their subjugation. Patriarchy is the resultant ossified system of those attitudes, prejudices, and actions as they become the norm.

Archives from the FAR founders: Rereading Adrienne Rich’s “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence” by Xochitl Alvizo

I recently reread the essay titled “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” by late poet and essayist Adrienne Rich, with my students this semester. Published in the summer of 1980, on the heels of the Women’s Liberation Movement, I found that the essay still maintains its relevance and challenges us to remember that feminism is a political movement that itself must be continually interrogated.  

The essay (which you can read here, with a foreword from Rich published 23 years after the original) has four sections which are titled only with the roman numbers I-IV. I labeled these sections for my students to try and capture the focus of each: I. Compulsory Heterosexuality – The Groundwork; II. Male Power and the Inequality of the Sexes; III. Lesbian Existence as Political Identity; and IV. Woman-Identification as Source of Power and Energy.

Archives from the FAR founders: Systemic Violence and the Killing of Michael Brown by Xochitl Alvizo

 This piece was originally posted on August 14, 2014, over ten years ago; add immigrants and Latine where it reads young black men, boys, or women, and it is as if I wrote it for today.

The current U.S. regime gives us more and more to rage and grieve over every single day. It is indeed important to grieve and to give ourselves the time to really feel what is going on under our watch so that we can then move into action with more resolve and efficacy. I invite you then to read, grieve, and then take action. Every day, do at least one thing – make a call to the president, your governor, senators, and representatives; engage in mutual aid; show up to a protest – and choose not to be a bystander. Oppression is systemic, indeed, but it is also a people, it is us.  The system is people and we are the system.

Oppression is systemic. Injustice is systemic. It pervades the whole – it seeps into everyday actions and becomes habits and patterns that function as default. As a result, the actions that fall within these patterns hardly need justifying. If anything, the questioning of them is what is put on the defensive. And those who stand against injustice must usually do so in the face of militarized policing, before vast forces that serve to preserve the status quo.

Census in Times of Fear by Xochitl Alvizo 

I received a notice from the U.S. Census Bureau recently that I was randomly selected to complete the “American Community Survey.” It came as a letter at first with instructions to complete the survey online. A few days later I received another letter saying “A few days ago, you should have received a letter from the U.S. Census Bureau asking me to complete the American Community Survey,” with big bolded letters that my “response is required by law.” I have since then received follow-up post-card reminders, a physical form survey with the same bolded message, and another post-card that they have sent repeated requests to complete the survey.
