I awaken chilled.
Darkness before dawn refuses to
illuminate frost covered bark –
frozen crystal fingers.
Barely breathing.
the forest sleeps,
Roots pulse Light.
I am running
from future
or past –
Withering away
in wrinkled skin,
Earth shudders.
Am I being called
by Raven,
and Owl
to choose?
Re-weave
the circle
of Shadow and Fire,
a monstrous West Moon,
embrace burning bones,
barren mountains
still hidden
from sight?
Postscript: Dreams like this one are mysterious and more than personal, I believe. Is this one about reclaiming Earth’s Shadow created by men? What do you think?
A 2019 reflection will follow tomorrow…

I know what you mean about dreams that are more than personal, and I agree this is one. Running away from future and past, that line speaks to me. But there is nowhere to go, except here, where we are now. For me the dream calls for courage, for a willingness not to know more than we can know, to dare the unknown, to show up fully now, arms and heart open. Thank you for sharing.

Elizabeth – running is what someone in me is still trying to do…. me and who knows who else…and you are right – there is nowhere to go -the courage to endure, to stand what we see and feel, and most important, to find joy in the present moment is our hope…

A unique way to relate a dream. Was this the way it was presented to you or did you write the poem in reflection? I do want to agree the earth has to be saved from what men has done to it. There’s a patch here I have in mind I’d like to keep as is rather having it developed into another crazy disregarding-of-the-consequences tourist development.

The dream was stark and simple – I am running from both the past and the future – the poem was written to deepen my relationship to the dream because I sensed it was more than personal – so the dream is contained in the reflection.

These words touched me deeply Sara:
“I am running
from future
or past –
Withering away
in wrinkled skin,
Earth shudders.”
Past and future are important, but I live right now. In my wrinkled skin! What do those wrinkles have to say?
And:
“Am I being called
by Raven,
and Owl
to choose?”
I love Raven, “the Trickster” and Owl, the “Wise One”. Together, can they inhabit my wrinkles and lead me to wise and creative actions in the “now”?

Barbara, oh I do so agree… it seems like never before how very very important it is to focus on the Now!

It’s said that it is harder to get a good night’s sleep as we age. But for me it’s exactly the opposite, no tossing and turning as I get older, and some lovely dreams.
